Traditional form of Indian art that originated in the town of Nathdwara in Rajasthan. The word "Pichwai" itself means "at the back" in Hindi, indicating that these paintings were originally hung behind the idol of Lord Krishna in temples, particularly in the famous Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara.

These paintings are typically large-scale and depict various scenes from the life of Lord Krishna, particularly focusing on his childhood exploits (Bal Leela) and his interactions with Radha and other gopis (milkmaids). Pichwai paintings are characterized by intricate details, vibrant colors, and rich symbolism.

Artists use natural dyes and pigments, including bold shades of red, blue, green, and yellow, to create visually stunning compositions. The backgrounds are often adorned with motifs such as lotus flowers, peacocks, and other elements from nature.

Pichwai paintings are not merely decorative; they also serve a devotional purpose, as they are believed to invoke spiritual blessings and create a sacred atmosphere. Over the years, this art form has evolved, with contemporary artists adding their own interpretations while still staying true to the traditional techniques and themes.
